Dramas are brewing off the pitch for Pakistan’s cricket squad prior to their Asia Cup 2025 match against the United Arab Emirates, as a pre-planned press briefing in Dubai was suddenly cancelled on Tuesday night without any formal explanation.
The 7:30 PM local time briefing was cancelled just hours ahead of its scheduled start. Although the team was still supposed to train at 9:00 PM, sources within the camp said that this too could be called off based on developments.
Rising Divide Between PCB and ICC
The cancellation follows the escalating tension between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC). This issue lies at the core of which is the PCB’s insistence that Andy Pycroft, one of the experienced match referees, be removed from conducting more matches in the tournament.
The PCB reportedly had deep reservations regarding Pycroft’s involvement in the high-voltage India vs Pakistan match, accusing him of inconsistent decision-making and bias. The PCB’s request to have him replaced was flatly rejected by the ICC, further exacerbating tensions.
Reacting to this, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi is reported to be consulting with top leadership from Pakistan’s administration on what the board should do next. A formal announcement detailing Pakistan’s stance is due in the hours ahead.
Sources indicate that if ICC sticks to its decision and PCB believes that its issues are not being heard, Pakistan might even consider pulling out of the Asia Cup – a step which could create shockwaves in the tournament.

For the time being, Pakistan is also scheduled to play the UAE on Wednesday, but with increasing uncertainty regarding the team mood and involvement, the spotlight has turned from the cricket to the politics of it.
