Australia’s spin wizard Adam Zampa has once again made headlines, carving his name into the record books by surpassing former Australian captain Steve Waugh to become the seventh-highest wicket-taker for Australia in ODIs. This milestone came during the second ODI against India at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, where Zampa delivered a spirited performance despite the match’s high-pressure situation.

With 196 wickets to his name at an average of 28.33 across 115 matches, Zampa edged past Waugh’s tally of 195 wickets. His best figures of 5 for 35 showcase his ability to turn matches around with his crafty wrist-spin. In this particular game, he picked up four wickets, conceding 60 runs in his full quota of 10 overs, marking his 12th four-wicket haul in ODI cricket.
Zampa was instrumental in breaking through India’s batting line-up, claiming key wickets of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to destabilize the visitors early on. He continued his fine work by taking two quick wickets in a single over, dismissing Axar Patel and Nitish Kumar Reddy, which left India reeling at 226 for 8.

Despite the setbacks, India managed to post a competitive total of 264 for 9, thanks to gritty fifties from Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, along with valuable late contributions from Deepak Hooda and Arshdeep Singh. The last 10 overs saw India add 66 runs, showing resilience after a shaky start.
On the Australian front, Josh Hazlewood was impressively economical, bowling 10 tight overs and giving away just 29 runs, though he couldn’t claim a wicket. Newcomer Xavier Bartlett made an immediate impact in his first game of the series, taking crucial wickets including the dismissal of India’s captain Shubman Gill for 9 and the legendary Virat Kohli for a duck in the same over. Notably, this marked the first time in Kohli’s ODI career that he was dismissed for ducks in back-to-back matches—a rare and shocking occurrence for the Indian batting maestro.
Australia’s disciplined bowling attack, led by Zampa and Bartlett who shared seven wickets between them, ensured that the hosts maintained control throughout the innings. With this dominant win, Australia has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series, putting the pressure squarely on India to bounce back in the next game.
As the series moves forward, all eyes will be on how India responds to this challenging start and whether Zampa can continue to weave his magic with the ball for Australia.
