Cricket fans around the world may still be talking about India’s thrilling Asia Cup 2025 triumph, but South African legend AB de Villiers has drawn attention to a different moment – one that happened off the pitch.
In the latest episode of his popular YouTube show #360, de Villiers didn’t hold back while discussing the awkward trophy presentation that followed India’s win. India had reportedly refused to accept the trophy from the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) President, sparking headlines and controversy across the cricketing world.
“Team India sort of weren’t happy with who was handing out the trophy. I don’t feel that belongs in sports,” AB said bluntly.
“Politics should stay aside. Sport is one thing, and it should be celebrated for what it is. It was quite sad to see that… quite awkward at the end.”
His message was clear: keep politics out of sport.
De Villiers acknowledged the difficult position players are often put in due to geopolitical tensions, and he empathized with the Indian team, but emphasized that moments of celebration in cricket should not be overshadowed by off-field issues.
Focus on Cricket, Not Chaos
Despite the controversy, ABD made sure to shine a spotlight on India’s stellar campaign and their rising stars. He called India’s performance “fantastic” and said the team looks “really, really strong” heading into the T20 World Cup.
Speaking about the final, which saw India chase down 147 in a tense finish, de Villiers was all praise for Tilak Varma, who anchored the innings with a calm and composed 69 off 53 balls*.
“That’s what I love about players like that,” de Villiers said. “They are adaptable to different situations and different conditions.”
A Call for Unity Through Sport
With his balanced take, AB de Villiers reminded fans and governing bodies alike of cricket’s true essence – a unifying force, not a political stage. While off-field incidents grabbed headlines, he urged everyone to bring the focus back to what matters: the game and the players who make it beautiful.
As the countdown to the T20 World Cup begins, India’s form and talent have caught the eye of one of the game’s greatest and his message echoes loud: let cricket be cricket.
