Legendary Indian batter Sunil Gavaskar has faced criticism on social media following his contrasting analysis of Rohit Sharma’s and Virat Kohli’s dismissals during the 2024 T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh. Rohit Sharma had made a quick 23 runs off 11 balls, giving India a strong start in the powerplay.
“Someone who has hit 10 runs in two balls would not go for a big shot, but for Rohit Sharma, it is all about the team,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

In contrast, Virat Kohli played a more cautious innings, scoring 37 off 28 balls. Gavaskar commended Rohit for his selfless and aggressive approach but was more critical of Kohli’s dismissal, which did not sit well with fans of India’s No. 18.

“What was he thinking? Should have played inside out,” was Gavaskar’s reaction.

The difference in reaction from Gavaskar to Rohit and Kohli’s dismissals left several fans unhappy on social media. The former India batter was tagged “biased” and a “hypocrite” by fans on X.

“It’s not fans but the commentators like Sunil Gavaskar who create the difference between the fans and players,” said one user, criticising Gavaskar’s opinion.

Rohit was dismissed while attempting a lofted shot off Shakib’s bowling, after hitting a six and a four in the same over. Gavaskar praised Rohit’s intent and aggression.

Rohit Sharma’s dismissal likely reminded Indian fans of the 2023 World Cup Final, where Rohit also got out after making a significant score in the same over. Kohli, who had struggled earlier in the tournament, seemed well set on 37 against Bangladesh. However, a rare slower ball from Bangladesh’s pacer Tanzim Hasan Sakib bowled him out.

Rohit and Kohli’s innings, combined with strong performances from Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Shivam Dube, helped India reach an impressive total of 196-5 in 20 overs. In response, Bangladesh fell short by 50 runs. With this victory, India has nearly secured a semi-final spot in the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.
