The young Indian batter is in the headlines again and this time not because of his cricketing skills or getting picked up by a franchise in IPL auction, but due to his controversial ‘age fraud’ havoc among the fans. The rumors were ignited by a video that has been circulating on the internet. According to an interview Suryavanshi gave in 2023 to BNN News Benipatti, Suryavanshi said that he would turn 14 on 27 September 2023.
Although this led a certain sections of cricket fans alleging ‘age fraud’ and demanded that the young cricketer reveal his real age, his father, Sanjiv Suryavanshi, asserted that he is 13 years old. He said in an interview with PTI,
“When he was eight and a half years old, he underwent his first BCCI bone test. He has already represented India at the U-19 level. We have nothing to fear-he is ready to undergo another age test if needed,”
Royals about Suryavanshi
Suryavanshi has been acquired by the Rajasthan Royals for 1.1 crores, thus becoming the youngest IPL player to lock a deal with a franchise. Less than two months ago, he played for India Under-19 and scored a century opening the batting against Australia in a four-day game in Chennai.
“He’s been to our high performance center in Nagpur, he had trials there and really impressed our coaching set-up there. He’s an incredible talent and of course you’ve got to have the confidence so he can step up to the IPL level.”
Rajasthan Royals’ CEO Jake Lush McCrum said after the auction ended in Saudi Arabia on Monday.
