Women Can Observe Partial Fasting for Karwa Chauth Under These Special Circumstances
In situations such as pregnancy, health concerns, or menstruation, traditional practices often permit relaxed observance of the Karwa Chauth fast. This may include liquid-only intake or skipping certain strict rituals, allowing women to honour the spirit of the festival while prioritizing their well-being.
Karwa Chauth is not just a day of fasting and devotion but also a moment to express gratitude through traditional bhog (food offerings) dedicated to Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and the Moon God.
The pre-dawn meal, known as Sargu, is your primary energy source for the entire day. Include complex carbohydrates such as oats, sabudana, poha, or whole wheat parathas to provide sustained energy. Add protein-rich foods like paneer, milk, yogurt, or dry fruits to help maintain muscle strength. Hydrating fruits such as watermelon, papaya, and oranges can help prevent dehydration. Avoid salty, spicy, or fried items, as they tend to increase thirst and can make fasting more difficult.
Since traditional fasting involves abstaining from water throughout the day, it’s important to hydrate well before sunrise. Aim to drink at least 2–3 glasses of water in the early morning. You can also include coconut water or buttermilk to help maintain electrolyte balance. It’s best to avoid tea and coffee, as caffeine may lead to dehydration and acidity later in the day.
On Karwa Chauth, the fast is broken after moonrise. Women who resist the temptation to eat until the last moment first witness the moon through a sieve, symbolizing positivity and devotion. They then offer Arghya (water) to the moon as a gesture of gratitude. Following this, the husband gives his wife the first sip of water or a sweet, putting an end to the fast. Women then eat and drink, often starting with fruits, sweets.
1. Avoid skipping Sargi: It helps sustain you through the day without food or water.2. Don’t overexert yourself: Save energy and avoid strenuous work to maintain your strength.3. Refrain from negative thoughts: Stay joyful and grateful throughout this spiritual observance.4. Don’t eat or drink early: Wait patiently until the moon is sighted to end the fast.5. Avoid arguments or stress: Keep the day peaceful and filled with love and devotion.
The Karwa Chauth Katha is central to the ritual. One of the most commonly narrated is the story of Veeravati
Veeravati, sister of seven brothers, undertook her first Karwa Chauth fast at her parents’ home. As evening came and she was weak from thirst and hunger, her brothers, worried, created a trick by placing a mirror to simulate the moonrise. Believing the moon had risen, Veeravati ended her fast prematurely. Tragically, she learned her husband had died. Overcome with grief, she performed a full, proper Karwa Chauth fast for a year with unwavering devotion. By divine grace, her husband was revived. The story illustrates faith, devotion, and the strict observance of the rules.
This narrative is recited aloud by an elder woman or priest during the puja, often in pause rhythms, with listeners holding rice or offering small donations to the reciter.
