Chhath Puja 2025 Sandhya Arghya: Chhath Puja celebrations are underway in India, and the third day, known as Sandhya Arghya, will be observed on Monday, October 27. The festival dedicated to worshipping Lord Surya, the Sun God, and Chhathi Maiya includes fasting, several rituals, and prayers to seek health, prosperity, and well-being for the entire family.
Chhath Puja is celebrated primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and parts of Nepal. The festival symbolises the worshipping of the Sun God and seeking his blessings for the well-being of family members. Devotees believe that observing the rituals with devotion brings prosperity, happiness, and health to their lives. Chhath Puja fasting is mainly observed by women for the well-being of sons and the happiness of the family.
Chhath Puja 2025: Sandhya Arghya Significance
The fast on the third day begins after consuming Prasad on the second day. A full-day fast without water is observed on the main third day of Chhath Puja. The main ritual on this day is offering Arghya to the setting Sun. It is the only time of the year when Arghya is given to the setting Sun. The fasting continues throughout the night making this the most important day of the four-day long festival.
Sandhya Arghya Rituals
Sandhya Arghya rituals include:
1) Nirjala Vrat (Fasting Without Water)
2) Preparation for Arghya: Devotees prepare offerings such as Thekua, fruits, sugarcane, coconut, and soaked gram in bamboo baskets.
3) Procession to the water body: In the evening, devotees, accompanied by family members, walk in a sacred procession to a riverbank, pond, or ghats, carrying the soop containing the offerings.
4) Offering Arghya to the Setting Sun: As the sun begins to set, devotees stand in the water and offer Arghya to the setting sun while chanting mantras and hymns dedicated to Lord Surya.
5) Prayers and Folk Songs: Devotees sing traditional Chhath songs and offer prayers seeking health, prosperity, and well-being for their family members.
