Buddha Purnima: Significance

Most of East Asia and South Asia commemorates Prince Siddhartha Gautama, later known as the Gautama Buddha, who was the founder of Buddhism, by celebrating Buddha Jayanti, also known as the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha. This year marks the 2585th year of Gautam Buddha’s birth. On this day, according to legend, Gautama Buddha acquired enlightenment. Buddha Jayanti, Vesak, Vaishaka, and Buddha’s Birthday are additional names for Buddha Purnima.

It is unknown when Gautama Buddha was born and when he passed away. The majority of historians place his lifetime between 563 and 483 BC, though. The majority of people believe that Lumbini, Nepal, is where Buddha was born. At the age of 80, Buddha passed away in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh.

According to Drik Panchang, Lord Krishna is regarded as the eighth manifestation of Lord Vishnu, whereas Buddha is regarded as the ninth. However, according to South Indian mythology, Buddha was never regarded as a Vishnu Avatar. Balarama is regarded as Lord Vishnu’s eighth incarnation in South India, while Krishna is his ninth. Many Vaishnava movements regard Balarama as a manifestation of Vishnu. Even Buddhists disagree that the Buddha is a manifestation of Lord Vishnu.
