Year Ender 2025: Notable new entrants in Indian politics

The year 2025 turned out to be politically eventful, witnessing elections for the Vice President, Rajya Sabha, multiple state Assemblies and several bypolls. It also marked the entry of many fresh faces into the political arena. Some newcomers grabbed headlines regardless of whether they emerged victorious or not.

Maithili Thakur: Well-known for her folk singing, Maithili Thakur stepped into politics and secured a remarkable win from Bihar’s Alinagar constituency on a BJP ticket. With this victory, she became the youngest MLA elected this year.

Khesari Lal Yadav: Popular Bhojpuri star and singer Shatrughan Kumar Yadav, better known as Khesari Lal Yadav, fought the Chapra seat on an RJD ticket. Despite the buzz around his candidacy, he slipped behind in the race and eventually lost in the Bihar Assembly polls.

Harish Khurana: Carrying forward the legacy of his late father, former Delhi Chief Minister Madan Lal Khurana, Harish Khurana quietly made his political entry. He clinched a win from Delhi’s Moti Nagar Assembly seat in his debut outing.

J.P. Singh: A former Himachal Pradesh ADGP and 2000-batch IPS officer, J.P. Singh tried his hand at politics for the first time by contesting the Bihar Assembly elections from Chapra.

Saurabh Thapliyal: BJP leader Saurabh Thapliyal registered a spectacular victory in the Dehradun mayoral elections held in January 2025. His win made history, as he secured the largest margin ever recorded in the city’s municipal polls.
