Built at an incredible altitude, it feels like you are boarding a train in the sky. This station is on the rail line connecting Golmud to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and is truly remarkable.

Location of the Highest Railway Station Tanggula Railway Station is located in Tibet on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway line, at an altitude of 5,068 meters (16,627 feet) above sea level. At such heights, passengers require oxygen masks due to the thin air.

First Rail Link Connecting Tibet to China Tanggula Railway Station is also known as Dangla Railway Station. It is part of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which was the first rail route connecting Tibet with the rest of China.

Construction and Passenger Services The station stretches 1.25 kilometers. Before 2010, no passenger trains stopped here, but now a passenger train passes through. Trains do not officially stop for boarding or deboarding; the station serves only as a technical stop.

Travel Without Oxygen is Not Possible Trains passing through this station are equipped with oxygen masks. Due to the high altitude, oxygen levels on the Qinghai-Tibet Railway are low, so, similar to airplanes, oxygen masks are provided above each passenger seat.

No Staff at the Station There is no staff present at Tanggula Railway Station. Everything operates automatically. Opened in July 2006, the station is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. The station has three tracks: one main platform, one for train shunting, and a third for a small platform.
