PM Modi Birthday: Have you seen these rare photos of the prime minister?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, one of the most popular leaders across the world, is celebrating his 75th birthday on Wednesday, September 17, 2025. PM Modi was born in a small town in Gujarat - Vadnagar - on September 17, 1950, and rose from humble beginnings to become India’s prime minister.

PM Modi grew up in a modest family. His father, Damodardas Mulchand Modi, sold tea at a stall near Vadnagar Railway Station, and his mother, Heeraben, was a homemaker. He has four brothers - Soma, Amrit, Prahlad and Pankaj - and a sister named Vasantiben.

According to the official page of PM India, "His school friends remember that as a child also he was very industrious and had an affinity for debates and a curiosity to read books. Schoolmates recollect how Mr. Modi used to spend many hours reading in the local Library. As a child he was also fond of swimming."

According to narendramodi.in, service has been a part of PM Modi’s life since childhood. When he was nine, he and his friends set up a food stall to help people hit by floods in the Tapi River and donated the money for relief work. During the war with Pakistan, he also served tea to soldiers travelling to and from the border.

At 17, PM Modi left home to travel across India and later joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), where his day started at 5 am and often continued late into the night. While still young, he also joined the movement against the Emergency.

PM Modi was inspired by the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, which shaped his spiritual outlook and focus on service. [Photograph from a wedding ceremony in Narendra Modi’s village, just before he left home for his journey.]

He married Jashodaben in 1968, but they have no children and are separated.

In 1985, PM Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

He went on to serve as Gujarat’s chief minister for four terms from 2001 to 2014.

On May 26, 2014, he became India’s 14th prime minister and is now in his third consecutive term.
