MS Dhoni To Shubman Gill: IPL’s Most Heated Player-Umpire Showdowns Through the Years | In Pics

Over the years IPL delivered thrilling cricket matches along with several heated confrontations between players and umpires. Ever-growing competition pressure alongside urgent on-field decisions and betting schemes on franchise matches tend to spark confrontations between players. Every IPL player whether rookie or celebrated veteran encountered disputes. So here is a list of top most player vs umpire flare-ups in IPL history.

IPL 2019 Season: During the CSK-RR match in 2019 Dhoni ran from the dugout onto the field to confront an umpire who reversed a no-ball call during the final over. Dhoni's infrequent display of passion during play left fans and pundits completely stunned. The 50% match fee fine that MS Dhoni received followed a moment that initiated discussions on both umpiring quality and captain behaviour.

IPL 2022 Season: DC captain Rishabh Pant reacted with anger when an umpire declined to signal a no-ball on a high full toss that happened in the last over of their close chase against RR during an IPL 2022 match. After requesting a decision review Pant was denied by the umpires. His frustration caused him to signal the batters to abandon the pitch. The authorities issued a monetary penalty to him after the event.

IPL 2022 Season: Marcus Stoinis voiced his anger to the umpire at the start of LSG vs RCB in IPL 2022 because Josh Hazlewood's delivery went way outside the legal area but was not called wide. Stoinis lost his patience when the next delivery led to his dismissal while his anger escalated into a heated argument with the umpire.

IPL 2024 Season: During an IPL 2024 match against DC Sanju Samson led RR as captain but became dissatisfied when an umpire ruled him out for catching the ball on a boundary line. The catch did not appear clean to him so he started an argument with the officials regarding the decision. The cricket authority imposed a fine equivalent to 30% of his match payment after the incident.

IPL 2025 Season: In an IPL 2025 match between Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad Shubman Gill became involved in two disputes which led to scrutiny. The fourth umpire faced an argument from Shubman Gill soon after the third umpire declared him out in a tight run-out decision. Gill later faced officials on the field when they made a DRS decision without using ball-tracking technology which led to an LBW appeal. A review process has been initiated due to Gill's conduct that could result in a suspension.
