MS Dhoni To Rohit Sharma: 5 Test Legends Who Walk Away Without A Farewell

As Virat Kohli has recently announced his retirement from the test format just before the England tour. This abrupt departure of his has stopped him from getting a proper farewell. But he is not the first player to experience this so here is a list of 5 players who did not get farewell after getting retired from test cricket.

Virat Kohli being one of the most influential figures of the modern game had to go out without a formal send off game after 123 Tests, 9,230 runs and 30 centuries. The man who advocated Test cricket’s glory and made India the most successful team across the border said goodbye by social media, instead of having a grand exit that his services deserved.

The Indian skipper sent shock waves across the cricketing world announcing his retirement from test format. He had a tough Australia tour where he could only score 31 runs in 3 Test matches, and he retired from the red-ball career soon after the Champions trophy win largely. Although, the Hitman played 67 Tests and amassed more than 4,300 runs, he walked off the stage without being honoured with a formal sendoff.

In December 2014, after the Australia tour, MS Dhoni announced his retirement after Melbourne Test and shocked both players and fans. There was none of that farewell lap, none of that guard of honour – just a press release to round off his 90-Test career. The man who took Indian cricket to the top of the Test rankings, bowed out from the format in his usual understated elegance, that characterised his stewardship.

Virender Sehwag made over 8,500 Test runs, hit two triple hundreds, and revolutionised the way opening batsmen behaved, forever. Then in came 2012 and that was a lean patch against England, the selectors slashed the axe and that was it. No going away, no standing ovation, just the most dashing opener bowing out into the sunset unnoticed. After some years, he retired officially although fans never said a goodbye.

VVS Laxman also had perfect sense of timing with his bat but he quit in a weird time. Just prior to a home series with New Zealand in 2012, where he was selected to play, he quit. Just like that! The motorman who thrashed Australia with that nightmare of 281 at Eden Gardens never did a victory lap around the field.
