From Air India crash to IndiGo crisis: 5 events that shook Indian aviation in 2025

The year 2025 marked a turbulent year for the rapidly growing Indian aviation industry, with major incidents and operational challenges grabbing national headlines. Unfortunate events such as the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad exposed the vulnerabilities and drew attention to the urgent need for safety, technical fixes, and improvements.
Kumbh Mela: Traffic to Prayagraj - Kumbh Mela created a massive spike in aviation traffic to Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj from other states in the country. Airlines, which did not offer services to the city, also added flights from almost every corner of India. This helped to generate tremendous profit in the challenging months between January and March. However, things started changing from April.

IATA 81st AGM: The International Air Transport Association (IATA)'s Annual General Meeting (AGM) returned to New Delhi after four decades, with airlines from across the globe coming to India for 3 days. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a keynote in the meeting. For a rapidly growing aviation market, the IATA AGM was a moment of pride.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: An Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick crashed in the Meghani Nagar area near Ahmedabad airport immediately after take-off. The plane involved, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, had 230 passengers and 12 crew members onboard and was en route to London. The crash was a major blow to Air India and the Tata group's efforts, leading to a delay in turnaround.

Kedarnath Helicopter Crash: Seven people were killed after the helicopter flying from Kedarnath temple to Uttarakhand's Guptkashi crashed in a forest in June 2025. The victims in the Aryan Aviation Chopper crash included the pilot. It crashed between Gaurikund and Sonprayag.

IndiGo Crisis: IndiGo, which carries nearly two out of every three domestic flyers, experienced major flight delays and several cancellations due to a severe crew shortage. The airline has been grappling with an acute pilot shortage ever since the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms, aimed at providing more humane work schedules, came into effect last month.
