Discover India’s Top 6 Maratha Forts: Newly Crowned UNESCO World Heritage Gems

Here are some of the famous Maratha Forts that were strategically built under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his successors, and are now recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

1- Raigad Fort: The capital of the Maratha Empire, is located in Mahad, Maharashtra. This fort was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji in the year 1674.

2- Sinhagad Fort: Also known as the Lion's Fort, is situated in the Pune district. It is famous for the battle of Sinhagad (Kondhana), fought in the year 1670.

3- Torna Fort: Also known as Prachandagad, is the first fort captured by Shivaji. It is located in the Pune district, Maharashtra, and was built by Shiva Panth in the 13th century.

4- Lohagad Fort: An 'Iron Fort' situated near Lonavala, Maharashtra. It is among the 12 Maratha forts recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2025. The fort was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1648 CE.

5- Sindhudurg Fort: It is famous as a sea fort. Sindhudurg Fort is situated in Malvan, Maharashtra. This fort was built nearly between 1664 and 1667 by Shivaji Maharaj.

6- Vijaydurg Fort: It is one of the oldest forts located on the Konkan Coast. It was originally built by Raja Bhoja II of the Shilahara dynasty in the 12th century.
