Business tycoon Anand Mahindra recently praised an impressive environmental success in India that even surprised him. He knew about the Miyawaki method (a fast way of growing forests), but he didn’t know about Dr. R.K. Nair, the man behind one of the world’s biggest uses of it. Mahindra found this out when he shared a video of a forest in Kutch, Gujarat, which is now the largest Miyawaki forest in the world. Mahendra has shared a video on his X handle.

I knew what a Miyawaki forest was but had no idea about Dr Nair and how he had created the world’s largest such forest in India.

Dr.Nair And The Miyawaki Forest
The forest covers 470 acres and has more than 3 lakh (300,000) native trees. It is part of a larger environmental effort led by Dr. R.K. Nair, who started the non-profit group called Enviro Creators Foundation. Since 2014, Dr. Nair has helped create over 100 Miyawaki forests across India.
Who Is Dr R.K.Nair
Dr R K Nair is a Malayali businessman based in Gujarat. He is a passionate environmentalist and the founder of the Enviro Creators Foundation. His foundation has become one of India’s leading green initiatives. Starting with a small forest of 1,500 trees in 2014, he has led a movement to reforest damaged and urban areas across the country. With over 100 Miyawaki forests created so far, his efforts have inspired governments, companies, and people to join in. His biggest success is the Smritivan Miyawaki forest in Kutch, the world’s largest of its kind, covering 470 acres. It honors the victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and shows how one person’s vision can make a big difference. Now, Dr. Nair aims to plant 100 crore (1 billion) trees by 2030 to help restore nature for the future. He has planted nearly 2 million trees in 88 mini forests across 12 states.
Miyawaki Forest
The Miyawaki technique, central to Dr. Nair’s mission, is a unique method of growing forests developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the 1970s. It involves planting a variety of native species close together to quickly create dense, natural forests. Often called the “pot plantation method,” it helps forests grow 10 times faster and become 30 times denser than traditional ones. This approach encourages biodiversity and creates self-sustaining ecosystems. Most of the forest, In the first two years, the trees were watered twice during the summer. Dried hay was placed around the base of each tree to help retain moisture. Dr. Nair explained that within three years, the tree roots will start growing into the rocky ground below. The plantation project is being funded through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions.

People online lauded and appreciated the work of Dr.Nair. Many even termed him “India’s Miyawaki Man” for planting over 2 million trees in 12 states. A few shared their own experiences of trying to grow small Miyawaki forests in their homes or societies, inspired by him. He was also called a green hero, an inspiration, and someone bringing hope for the future. One user noted that while politicians and celebrities dominate headlines, it’s changemakers like Dr. Nair who are creating real, tangible impact—both for people and the planet.
