Securing a government job is the ultimate goal for most middle-class youth in our country. Many college students rely heavily on coaching classes to achieve this dream. However, there are individuals who dare to leave high-profile jobs behind to chase their true passions. Dr. Kamini Singh is one of those who left a high-profile job to pursue her passion. Her bold decision has paid off remarkably well—today, her business generates an annual turnover of approximately Rs 2 crore.
Kamini quit her job to launch an organic moringa powder startup. She cultivates organic moringa, commonly known as drumstick, and has expanded its use beyond the kitchen. While most people use moringa to prepare sambhar for idli and dosa, Kamini envisioned a different potential.
She began producing a range of everyday products, including moringa powder, soaps, oil, mosquito repellent spray, and tea, all derived from the moringa plant. Kamini proudly asserts that her products are completely organic, appealing to health-conscious consumers seeking sustainable and natural alternatives.
How She Started Chasing Her Dream
Kamini used to work as a scientist in CISH, Lucknow. During work, she got inclined towards farming. After working for 7 years, she resigned in 2015 to do research on Moringa. During that time, a company related to farmers offered her the post of Project Director, which she accepted. While working here only she was able to engage with many farmers, from whom she derived the new business concept.
2017 – The New Beginning
Kamini recalls that in 2017, she launched a pilot project with farmers to cultivate moringa. The reason she chose moringa was its natural resilience—it requires no chemicals and grows in every season. According to Kamini, the leaves, roots, and fruits (drumsticks) of the moringa tree are packed with essential vitamins and minerals. The extract is used in products known for their antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties.
Business Growth
Initially, Kamini produced only moringa powder, selling it in pouch packaging at local market stalls. During this period, she learned about an agricultural business incubator at IIT (BHU), where young agricultural entrepreneurs received valuable support. Kamini applied with her moringa project, and her application was approved. She received a grant of Rs 25 lakh, which she used to expand her business, purchasing a machine for oil extraction and capsule filling.
Annual Revenue
Today, Kamini’s business is worth several crores. She has expanded her product range and now sells moringa products online. She collaborates with over 1,050 farmers in Uttar Pradesh, promoting organic moringa farming. Kamini provides guidance on how to cultivate moringa organically and purchases the crops from these farmers, ensuring they earn a good income.
Kamini’s current annual revenue stands at approximately Rs 1.75 crore, and she projects it will reach Rs 2.5 crore by the financial year 2025.
