Poonam Gupta: The Ex-World Bank Economist Now RBI Deputy Governor – All You Need To Know

Poonam Gupta, a distinguished economist, has been appointed as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term.

The director of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), Poonam Gupta, has been appointed as the deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India for a three-year period, officials said. The position of RBI Deputy Governor was vacant following the retirement of MD Patra in January.

Three-Year Appointment

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has authorized the appointment of Poonam Gupta as RBI Deputy Governor for a three-year term, starting from the date she begins her appointment, as reported by news agency PTI.

About Gupta’s Leadership Role

Poonam Gupta is the Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), India’s foremost applied think-tank in economic policy. She is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and serves as the Convener of the Advisory Council for the 16th Finance Commission.

Extensive Experience with IMF, World Bank, and Academia

Before she joined NCAER in 2021, she spent nearly 20 years in senior positions at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, DC. She has also taught at the Delhi School of Economics, the University of Maryland (USA), and has served as visiting faculty at the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Delhi.

Notable Academic And Professional Achievements

Gupta has served in the role of RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER). She possesses a Master’s Degree and PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland in the USA and a Master’s degree in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi. In 1998 she won the EXIM Bank prize for the doctorate research in international economics.
