Shahid Rafiq ‘Shad’ Khan, commonly known as Shahid Khan, has an extraordinary journey. He began his career as a dishwasher and eventually became the richest person in Pakistan. Beyond his immense wealth, the Pakistani-American businessman is also one of the world’s biggest sports tycoons. From owning teams in various sports to leading a major automotive manufacturing company, Shahid Khan stands as a towering figure in Pakistan and across Asia. His Story
Shahid Khan was born on July 18, 1950 into a middle-class family in Lahore. His family was in the construction business, with Shahid’s mother as a mathematics professor, and his father used to run a shop. Shahid’s brother Tariq Rafiq Khan unfortunately passed away in his 20s. After his death the whole responsibility of his family fell on Shahid Khan’s shoulders. At his age of 16, Shahid’s parents sent him to the US for education. He took admission at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign.
While studying in the United States, he also worked as a dishwasher to earn some extra money. He earned a living by washing dishes for $1.20 per hour. Shahid Khan enrolled at Grainger College of Engineering, where he pursued a Bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering. Decades later, in recognition of his remarkable achievements, he was honored with the prestigious Mechanical Science and Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999.
One of the most inspiring chapters of Shahid Khan’s journey is how he went from being a junior employee at Flex-N-Gate to owning the entire company. While still in college, he worked at the auto parts manufacturer in a junior role. However, his ambition didn’t stop there. Before acquiring Flex-N-Gate in 1980, he launched Bumper Works, a company that quickly made waves in the automotive industry. His success with Bumper Works eventually paved the way for him to buy the very company where he once worked.
