New Delhi, May 19: If you are worried about the privacy of your Aadhar card, don't be.
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has come up with a feature that will effectively put an end to your privacy concerns as it allows you to lock or unlock your Aadhaar number at your own sweet will.
Once your Aadhaar number number has been locked, it can't be used for authentication services through OTP, biometric, demographics or any other means.
However, even after you have locked your Aadhaar number, you will still be able to use it to authenticate yourself for KYC purposes.
In order to do this, you will have to use the Virtual ID (VID), which is a 16-digit random number issued by the UIDAI. This VID can be used instead of Aadhaar number to keep your private biometric data secure.
"VID is a temporary, revocable 16-digit random number mapped with the Aadhaar number. VID can be used in lieu of Aadhaar number whenever authentication or e-KYC services are performed. Authentication may be performed using VID in a manner similar to using Aadhaar number. It is not possible to derive Aadhaar number from VID," a statement on the official UIDAI website said.
