Lucknow: When Yogi Adityanath assumed charge in UP after a bitterly fought elections, many feared political vendetta. But, Yogi has proved his critics wrong, at least in the area of welfare schemes started by the Akhilesh Yadav government.
The Yogi government has decided to continue the scheme to distribute free laptops. This is one of the key schemes that had brought the Samajwadi Party to power in 2012. In any case, this was a poll promise by the BJP also in the 2017 elections.
The only thing that has changed is the number of beneficiaries. Focussing on targeted freebies, the new government has estimated that the laptops need to be given to 12 lakh students, instead of 18 lakh proposed by the previous government, The Times of India reported. With this, the budget for the scheme will be reduced by Rs 1,000 crore. The cost of one laptop is estimated at Rs 15,000.
Under the scheme, laptops with 2GB data will be given to students who have passed class XII and would take admission to higher studies.
Earlier, the Yogi government had decided to continue the scheme to distribute school bags with image of Akhilesh Yadav.
The Yogi government will also give free uniform, shoes and socks and books to students from poor families up to Class XII. Bag is estimated to cost Rs 150, set of books Rs 908 , shoes and socks Rs 500 and uniform Rs 1,000. A total of Rs 2,500 have been earmarked for the scheme.
