New Delhi: Lionel Messi is among four players in the Paris Saint-Germain squad to have tested positive for the coronavirus ahead of the team's French Cup game. Paris Saint-Germain confirmed on Sunday that Lionel Messi, Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico and Nathan Bitumazala had tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
"Tests carried out during the winter break and before the resumption of training revealed 4 positive cases for Covid-19 among the players and 1 positive case among the staff. The people concerned are subject to the Covid protocols," the Club tweeted.
In a statement, the Club said, that Brazilian International, Neymar Jr. will be undergoing treatment in Brazil till January 9 and his return is expected to be in 3 weeks' time. The Brazilian forward is nursing an ankle injury suffered last month.
"Neymar JR will continue his treatment in Brazil until 9 January with members of the Paris Saint-Germain medical and performance staff. His return to training is still expected to be in about 3 weeks," the club said.
"They are currently in isolation and are subject to the appropriate health protocol," the club issued a statement.
Recently, five members of Atletico Madrid tested Covid-19 positive, including manager Diego Simeone, while Barcelona had three more cases among their players on Thursday, the LaLiga clubs said.
Simeone, captain Koke, midfielder Hector Herrera plus forwards Antoine Griezmann and Joao Felix all tested positive for the coronavirus.
All those infected are asymptomatic and isolating at their respective homes, in compliance with the guidelines.
Barcelona's midfielder Philippe Coutinho, defender Sergino Dest and winger Ez Abde were the latest to return positive COVID19 tests.
Earlier, Ousmane Dembele, Samuel Umtiti and Gavi tested positive.
