Sanjeev Trivedi, New Delhi: China has become jittery after India completed the construction of the Atal Tunnel and Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on Saturday (October 3).
The Atal Tunnel has vastly improved the Indian Army's ability to mobilise troops, weapons and equipment to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in case of an armed conflict with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) of China.
The extent to which China has become scared of the Indian Army's increased prowess can be gauged from the Chinese media's reaction to the Atal Atuunel.
As usual, Global Times, the mouthpiece of the Chinese government, has started a massive propaganda campaign against the Atal Tunnel and has tried to threaten India.
An article in the Global Times has claimed that it is neither the longest tunnel in the world nor is it situated at the highest altitude. China has also questioned the construction quality of the world's longest tunnel through its official newspaper Global Times.
The Global Times has written in its article that India is developing roads, bridges and other infrastructure along the border with China. Since the area is mountainous and densely populated, this tunnel has been constructed for military purposes only. Now is the time for peace and India is unable to realize that the irreversible tunnel will not work if war breaks out.
"The whole country is happy with the construction of this tunnel, but as far as Indian politicians are concerned, they are using it only for their show and political benefit. This is clearly a part of political propaganda," the article claimed.
According to the Global Times, no tunnel can increase India's combat capability. There is definitely a big difference in the combat capability of India and China, especially India's war capability is not well organized at all. India is far from the potential of China. The newspaper has advised India to exercise restraint and said that it should avoid any provocative activity.
The Government of India has spent Rs 3200 crores to build this 9.02 km long tunnel. This tunnel connects Manali and Lahaul Spiti in Himachal Pradesh. This tunnel is the longest tunnel in the world built at an altitude of 3000 meters.
