Kabul: As a symbol of friendship between India and Afghanistan, the Indian government on Tuesday decided and declared to build a new dam in Afghanistan.
It will not only strengthen India-Afghanistan friendship but also provide safe and clean drinking water to 2 million people in Kabul city.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar signed an agreement with Afghanistan to construct a dam named 'Shoot'. He led the Indian delegation which was held virtually in Geneva from November 23 to 24 at the 2020 Afghanistan Conference.
The united nations co-hosted the conference where the government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, and the government of Finland aimed to reaffirm the commitment of the international community to Afghanistan.
Previously, India had generated a 202-km Phul-e-Khumri transmission line which made electricity available to the city of Kabul.
In his statement, Foreign Minister Jaishankar gave importance to the long-term commitment of India to the development of Afghanistan and to provide incentives to its people for being a contiguous neighbour and strategic partner.
Jaishankar called attention to the fact that no part of Afghanistan today has been untouched by the 400-plus projects that India has undertaken in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. There are approximately 65 thousand afghani students who have so far studied in India. India's development portfolio in Afghanistan has to-date amounted to over 3 billion US Dollars.
India aided 75,000 tonnes of wheat to ensure food security in Afghanistan during the pandemic and transported it to Chabahar port.
