Beijing: Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang are forced to eat pork every Friday by the Chinese government, inmates of one of the “re-education” camps in the troubled region has said.
A physician and an educator living in Sweden Sayragul Sautbay has recently published a book which offers an insight into her ordeal.
“Every Friday, we were forced to eat pork meat…They have intentionally chosen a day that is holy for the Muslims. And if you reject it, you would get a harsh punishment,” Sayragul said in an interview with Al Jazeera.
“I was feeling like I was a different person. All around me got dark. It was really difficult to accept,” she added.
Zumret Dawut, another victim of China's genocide against Uyghur Muslims in Xinjiang, was abducted by the Chinese authorities in Urumqi in March 2018 .
Married to a Pakistani, she was questioned about her links to Pakistan for two months. She was also asked about her children and whether they had studied religion and read the Quran.
She also confirmed that Uyghur Muslims are being forced to eat pork by the Chinese authorities in the numerous 're-education camps' spread all around Xinjiang.
Shohrat Zakir, the top Chinese official in Xinjiang, had said last year that the region will be turned into a major hub of pig farming.
