Kathmandu: China has been furious over the growing friendship between Nepal's Sher Bahadur Deuba government and the US and officials of the Biden administration meeting Tibetan refugees in Kathmandu. China has indirectly told the Nepal government that the 'One China Policy' should not be affected by any reason, internal or external.

It is believed that due to the frequent visits of US officials to Nepal, China has come under tension and is fearing Tibetan refugees.

According to a report in the Kathmandu Post, at the 14th meeting of the Nepal China Bilateral Consultative Mechanism, the Chinese side objected to the meeting of American officials with Tibetan refugees in two camps in Nepal. Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State Ujra Zeya visited two Tibetan camps. An official involved in this meeting said that China's message was very clear. The meeting was attended by the Foreign Secretary of Nepal and the Chinese Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Visiting Tibetan refugees against Nepal's wishes

Officials of many departments of Nepal participated in this meeting. Earlier, US Deputy Secretary of State and Tibetan Refugees Coordinator Ujra Jeya had visited Nepal on 20 May. He went against the wishes of Nepal and met Tibetan refugees. Nepal's Foreign Ministry had said that they had no information about the visit of the US minister to the camps. About 15,000 Tibetan refugees live in Nepal.

It is believed that many of these Tibetans have not yet been given refugee cards under pressure from China. Due to this, they are not able to continue their studies, they are not able to do business and they are not able to go abroad.

After China's objection, the Nepalese side re-assured China that it follows the one China policy and will not allow its land to be used against neighboring countries. The US minister met the Dalai Lama and other officials of the Tibetan government-in-exile in Dharamsala before coming to Nepal.

Nepal should follow One China Policy: Chinese envoy

Just before the visit of the US Vice Secretary of State, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hao Yankee had met Nepal's Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand and said that Nepal should respect and follow the One China policy. China has been running in tension since Nepal's permission to US aid MCC. China had warned Nepal about the MCC but the Deuba government refused to bow down to the dragon.
