New Delhi: Billionaire Philanthropists Bill and Melinda Gates have announced separation in a joint statement, putting an end to their 27-year of marriage.
"After a great deal of thought and a lot of work on our relationship, we have made the decision to end our marriage," the pair wrote in a joint statement posted on Twitter on Monday by the Microsoft founder.
"Over the last 27 years we have raised three incredible children and built a foundation that works all over the world to enable all people to lead healthy, productive lives. We continue to share a belief in that mission and will continue our work together at the foundations, but we no longer believe we can grow together as a couple in this next phase of our lives," the statement added.
The couple have three children together and jointly run the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which is based in Seattle. The foundation works for the improvement of health and provides equal chances of expression to people to lift themselves out of poverty line. From providing medical aides to helping people with fewer resources, the foundation has emerged as the saviour of many in need across the world.
The foundation has reportedly spent more than $54 billion on projects by the end of 2019.
According to report, Melinda and Bill had met in the late 1980s when Melinda joined Microsoft. The couple has three children Jennifer, Phoebe and Rory Gates, and live in a mansion overlooking Lake Washington in Washington state. The split has raised eyebrows on the Gates wealth which could prove as complex to carve up as the 2019 infamous Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott divorce
