New Delhi, Jan 6: In a shocking incident, a comatose woman has given birth to a child. Hospitalised woman has been in a vegetative state for over a decade. She was incapacitated after a tragic drowning incident.
The incident has shaken America, and anger is being witnessed across the country. After the outrage, Phoenix police said is now investigating reports of sexual assault on the woman in coma.
She was being treated at Hacienda Healthcare, where she went into labour on December 29. She then gave birth to a baby boy, local media reported. Reports said that nobody was aware that she was pregnant, and the healthcare staff initially could not find out why she was moaning.
“This matter is currently under investigation by the Phoenix Police Department,” Sergeant Tommy Thompsontold Reuters was quoted as saying in a Reuters report.
Hospital spokesman David Leibowitz said the facility had recently become aware of a “deeply disturbing incident” involving one of its patients.
However, the spokesman refused to divulge whether hospital staff have been asked to undergo DNA test. He also declined to answer the question on what steps the hopsital was taking to protect other such patients.
“While federal and state privacy laws prohibit us from publicly discussing a patient’s health or case, Hacienda has and will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all the relevant regulatory agencies regarding this matter,” Leibowitz said in an email answer
On the other hand victim's lawyer Tasha Menaker (Chief Strategy Officer of the Arizona Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence) wants the police to do DNA tests of hospital staff.
The hospital claims to be Arizona’s leading provider of specialized health care services for medically fragile and chronically ill infants, children, teens, and young adults as well as those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
After the incident Arizona Governor Doug Ducey has swung into action. The Governor's spokesman termed the incident “deeply troubling”. He also said that the state will review its contract with the hospital to tighten control in order to ensure patient safety.
