Women's Day calls for a special mention of Alankrita Srivastava who dared to break taboos

New Delhi, March 8: We saw the brave face of this young filmmaker when she dared to tread the untrodden path with elan and confidence. Alankrita Srivastava decided to make Lipstick Under my Burkha, which featured Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur, Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey and Shashank Arora, revolves around four small-town women, who try to steal a piece of freedom from within the confines of their restrained lives.
And as expected there was a big furor and opposition to the film.

The young filmmaker felt that it was not the issue of “sexual content” which made the board squeamish but the fact that the women characters in the film take charge of their sexuality.

What made the menfolk uncomfortable was that women felt that they are not fulfilled in these conventional relationships. That threatens the patriarchal order of society. It’s not the sexual content which is bothering them, it is the fact of women claiming agency over their own sexually, felt the filmmaker.

But then the film did get released and got applause from all quarters.

News24 salutes this brave filmmaker on Women's Day.
