Big News... May 23 election results will be delayed

New Delhi, May 7: The declaration of the results of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections could be delayed due to voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) matching. While the 7-phased polls will end on May 19, the counting of votes is scheduled for May 23.But according to a report quoting the Election Commission (EC), the result - which is generally declared in a few hours - may take a longer time this year following the commission’s directions to match VVPAT slips of five booths in each constituency. The VVPAT machines are being used as several opposition parties had raised concerns over the functioning of the electronic voting machine (EVM) following the ruling NDA coalition's sweeping victory in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The Supreme Court (SC) had issued an order on April 8, increasing VVPAT verification from just one to five EVMs per Assembly segment in a Parliamentary constituency. The apex court's decision was challenged by 21 opposition leaders, who filed a review petition demanding that 50 percent of the EVMs should be randomly checked using the VVPAT in every assembly segment. The SC had turned down the plea.
