New Delhi: Once upon a time Vinod Khanna was the biggest threat to the rising stardom of Amitabh Bachchan. That was a day and this was a day. And today as soon as Big B learned about his sad demise he rushed to be at the side of his friend and his sobbing family.
Film veterans feel that had Vinod Khanna not left the industry in 80s, 1982, to be precise, he could have dethroned Amitabh Bachchan. But humble Vinod Khanna, as was his nature, firmly disagreed to this proposition as he kept on saying that with Sholay and Deewar in Big B’s kitty he could never do that. But despite a silent threat, the two were best of buddies and the chemistry was easily seen in the many films they did together.
At the zenith of his career Vinod Khanna had renounced everything. There was a big furor in the industry and amidst his fans. One fine day in 1982 he called a press conference along with his then wife Gitanjali and sons Rahul and Akshay. He announced that he was leaving everything behind to be with his master Osho Rajneesh at Rajneeshpuram in USA. This shocked the entire media team there.
As was the rule of the industry during 80s, there could be only onr superstar, and Amitabh Bachchan continued to rule the roost.
Among the films in which their pair was best were undoubtedly Amar Akbar Anthony, Muquadar ka Sikandar and Hera Pheri. Besides these they also worked in Kunwara Baap, Guddi, Khoon Pasina, Parvarish, Insaaf and Reshma.
