Vehicles entering Delhi without recharged RFID tags to pay double toll amount from Sept 13

RFID tags-Toll taxNew Delhi, Sept 11: Vehicles entering Delhi without recharged radio-frequency identity (RFID) tags will have to pay double toll amount as fine from 13th September. This move comes after an EPCA meeting on Tuesday, where it was revealed that 3.4 lakh vehicles had already been tagged at Delhi’s borders.

RFID tags will allow automatic collection of toll tax and environment compensation charge from commercial vehicles in the city.EPCA and South Delhi Municipal Corporation last week, in a move to improve compliance and registration, jointly launched a website, www.ecctagsdmc.com, to assist people in registering for RFID tags. This will help in reducing the length of queues at point of sale counters.

“The idea behind RFID was cashless transactions and reduction in waiting time at the toll plaza to 2-3 seconds. In the past one week since its launch, 2,000 applications have been received online. The website has been created to reduce the rush at toll points. Once you get an SMS, you can collect the RFID tag from the toll plaza mentioned there,” EPCA member Sunita Narain was quoted as saying.

While CNG-run vehicles pay only MCD tax, non-CNG vehicles have to pay for the environment compensation charge too.

For CNG vehicles, one can also take a monthly pass by paying Rs 3,000 for a car, Rs 6,000 for bus and Rs 9,000 for a six-wheeler.The meeting also decided that empty vehicles will pay full ECC but will get half-refund in their online wallet after getting the vehicle checked at a PoS.

Moreover, vehicles will be required to keep minimum balance of one-transaction charge while free lanes violators will be warned with an FIR.
