Union Cabinet clears Triple Talaq Bill which makes it a criminal offense

New Delhi, Dec 15: The Cabinet clears the Triple Talaq Bill making it a criminal offence. This comes as a big relief to all Muslim women who were living in the shadow of the lurking danger of Triple Talaq.

The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017, is popularly known as a bill on 'Triple Talaq', a form of oral divorce among the Muslims. According to government sources, the Bill has provision for punishment for this form of divorce.

The government intends to get the statute passed in the Winter Session of Parliament which began today. The bill piloted by the law ministry stems from the recent Supreme Court verdict banning instant divorce.

In a landmark verdict in August this year, the Supreme Court by a majority of 3:2 today ruled that the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims is "void", "illegal" and "unconstitutional".

The apex court held that the triple talaq is against the basic tenets of Quran.
