Triple talaq bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha today

New Delhi, August 10, News24 Bureau: Passing the Triple Talaq Bill in this session is one of the major concerns of the government this time. After a smooth passage in Lok Sabha, it got stuck in Rajya Sabha due to numbers. But the government is hell-bent on its passage this year.

Therefore the centre will today make a fresh attempt in Rajya Sabha to clear the draft law making instant triple talaq a criminal offence, it remains to be seen how it works. Selection of a deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh backed by NDA is making the government hopeful.

It is the last day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and the government could introduce amendments in Rajya Sabha. here are the LIVE updates on the Bill:

-Triple Talaq Bill will not be taken up today because no consensus could be built around it: Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu

- "Our party's position is absolutely clear on this, I will not say anything on this further," says Sonia Gandhi on Triple Talaq
If at all the bill is cleared by the upper house, it will have to go back to Lok Sabha for approval of the amendments.
This move has come only a day after the Union Cabinet made some amendments to the draft bill, including adding a bail provision to it.
While the proposed law will remain "non-bailable", the accused can approach a magistrate even before trial to seek bail.

Under a non-bailable law, bail cannot be granted by police at the police station itself.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said a provision has been added to allow the magistrate to grant bail "after hearing the wife".
Also an FIR can be filed in Triple Talaq only by the victim herself or by her blood relative.
