Apart from a major diplomatic victory at the UNGA, meetings with big corporates, and the QUAD summit, PM Modi has logged another achievement during his visit to the USA by renewing old ties with US President Joe Biden.
Washington: US President Joe Biden and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met for important talks on the Indo-Pacific region, but first the leaders discussed the president's own family ties in the subcontinent.
Biden recalled that shortly after being elected to the US Senate for the first time, he received a letter from a Mumbai man stating that his last name was also Biden. The president said he never got a chance to follow up.
Later as US vice president, Joe Biden was in India and was recalled by the local press if he had any Indian relatives. He retold the story of the letter.
The next day, Joe Biden said, "I was informed by the Indian press that there were some Biden in India."
"However, we never followed it up. I came to know that there was a Captain George Biden, who was the captain in the East India Tea Company in India,'' Joe Biden said.
It seems that Joe Biden was referring to the British East India Company.
Joe Biden, who often speaks of his Irish descent, quipped that British relations were "difficult for an Irishman to accept."
Joe Biden, who has previously told Indian audiences versions of the story, said that Captain Biden had apparently stayed in India and married an Indian woman, but he could never give further details.
"Modi is in Washington to help me find out," he joked.
In fact, PM Modi told the President that he had looked into it and had brought documents shedding light on US President Joe Biden's Mumbai connection.
