Lucknow: Samajwadi Party worker from Aligarh Aditya Thakur, on Sunday, attempted to immolate himself outside the party office in Lucknow after being denied a ticket to contest from 74-Chharra constituency for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls 2022.
Thakur poured petrol and attempted to set himself on fore in front of Samajwadi Party's headquarter at Vikramadityamarg in Lucknow. The police and bystanders present in the spot rushed towards him and stopped him.
The police detained the SP worker. Talking to media, he said, "I have done a lot of ground work for Samajwadi Party. I will commit suicide, take my life at any cost. You cannot stop me even if you put me in jail."
He also accused Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party of giving his ticket to "outsiders". He further claimed that he did not have a criminal record but was still denied a ticket.
Dr Shamsher Yadav Jagrana, SP Advocate in high court, claimed that Aditya Thakur is an "agent" of the Bharatiya Janata Party and he was never a MLA before and no party ticket was promised to him."
He further said, "The entire episode was a planned plot. He has never applied for a ticket, he is also not an active member of Samajwadi Party or lifetime member of the party."
