Chandigarh: After Congress denied a ticket to Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi's brother Manohar Singh for the Bassi Pathana seat, the latter announced that he will be contesting the assembly polls as an independent candidate.
Congress has fielded MLA Gurpreet Singh GP from the Bassi Pathana seat. The Congress has apparently denied ticket to Manohar Singh because of its 'one family, one ticket' rule.
Manohar Singh on Sunday said, "I was a contender for the Bassi Pathana seat, but the party (Congress) has denied a ticket. I will contest the election as an independent candidate. I did the same in 2007 and won the election."
Addressing the gathering, Manohar Singh said he will contest as an independent and ensure the defeat of the sitting Congress MLA who has been fielded again.
Talking to PTI, Manohar Singh, "Several prominent people of Bassi Pathana area have asked me to fight as an independent and I will go by what they have said. There is no chance of going back and I will surely fight the polls."
Manohar Singh said the Congress' decision was an injustice to him and the people of the constituency.
Dr Manohar Singh resigned from the post of Senior Medical Officer at Kharar Civil Hospital, Mohali in August 2021. Bassi Pathan assembly seat is reserved for the SC category.
Manohar Singh claimed that he was posted at Nandpur Kalaur Primary Health Center during COVID-19 and he did a lot of work in the area, but the MLA GP transferred him from there.
Voting for 117 seats of Punjab assembly will be held in a single phase on February 14 and counting will take place on March 10.
