AAP to announce its Punjab Chief Ministerial candidate on Tuesday at noon: Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday said his party will announce the name of its Punjab Chief Ministerial candidate on Tuesday (January 18) at 12 pm.

"Punjab CM face will be announced tomorrow at 12 pm," Kejriwal told media at flagging off event of electric bus services in Delhi. 

This comes a day after AAP leader Harpal Singh Cheema said more than 15 lakh people have responded to the phone number released by the party to choose AAP's chief ministerial face in Punjab. The drive has been named as "Janta Chunegi Apna CM".

"In the last 72 hours, more than 15 lakh people have responded to the phone number released by the AAP to choose the party’s chief ministerial face in Punjab," Harpal Singh Cheema, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, said.

The AAP Punjab leader also informed that the party received over 5.5 lakh WhatsApp messages, more than 6.7 lakh phone calls, over 1.5 lakh text messages and more than 1.5 lakh voice messages on the its assigned number.

On Thursday (January 13), Arvind Kejriwal launched the "Janta Chunegi Apna CM" drive, saying the name of the candidate for the top post will be announced after getting the feedback of people.

The people of poll-bound state Punjab have been asked to send in their choice via SMS, WhatsApp or voice message on mobile number 7074870748 till 5 pm on Monday (January 17).

Voting for 117 seats of Punjab assembly will be held in a single phase on February 14. The results will be declared on March 10.

For the uninitiated, in the 2017 Punjab assembly polls, Aam Aadmi Party emerged as the second-largest party with 20 seats. The government in the state was formed by the Congress after it bagged majority 77 assembly seats. SAD managed win over 15 seats, while BJP settled with mere three seats.
