Three Health Tips for Safely Heating your homes in the winter

Winter is the season for residential fires all over the country. At least eight people die each week due to fires, with almost three-quarters of those deaths due to residential fires.

1. Don't dry clothes or shoes on or near a heater. Turn the heater off when you aren't in the room, and do not leave children or pets unsupervised with a heater that is turned on in the room.

2. Periodically inspect the heater’s cord for spoilage and frayed or exposed wires, and don't use the appliance if any wreckage is present.

3. Don't run an extension cord under furniture of under a rug. Traffic over the cord or the weight of furniture on it may wreck the cord and create a fire hazard.
