New Delhi: In a major disappointment to team India's upcoming test series against Australia, opener Rohit Sharma and, fast bowler, Ishant Sharma have been ruled out of the opening two matches of the four matches series which is scheduled to kick start from December 17. Their fortunes for the last two tests is yet to be determined by BCCI, ESPNcricinfo reported.
According to the report, Ishant will have to fly to Australia almost immediately to be in contention for the third tests while BCCI hinges on "swift and decisive" action. The third state will start from January 7, 2021 in Sydney.
"If there is a T20 game and he needs to just bowl four overs, Ishant is good to go immediately, but for him to get back to Test-match fitness, he needs four weeks of proper bowling still," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) to recover from a hamstring injury that he sustained during IPL 2020.
According to the report, Rohit's assessment would be made after he travels to Australia in the second week of December and takes two weeks of further rehabilitation. The BCCI has said that the cricketer would have had a better chance of playing the test series if he had directly flown to Australia from UAE with the India Team.
Earlier, team India head coach Ravi Shashtri had said that Rohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma will have to reach Australia in a week if they are to take part in test sereis.
"He's (Rohit) going through some tests at the NCA and they're obviously going to decide (for) how long he needs to take a break," Shastri said, speaking to ABC Sport.
"But things could get difficult if he's asked to wait for too long, (because) then you're talking of the quarantine again, which might make it really tough for even him to come just in time for the Test series," he had added.
