'Sonia was not in favour of Narasimha Rao as PM'

New Delhi: Former Media Advisor to ex-PM Manmohan Singh, Sanjaya Baru has claimed that Sonia Gandhi was not in favour of Narasimha Rao as Indian Prime Minister after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.

Post-assassination, when the Congress asked for Sonia's view, she took Shankar Dayal Sharma's (former President), Baru said. Sanjaya Baru is believed to have been close to Narsimha Rao. This claim is likely to give further ammunition to BJP, which says that Congress, under direction from Sonia Gandhi, has never owned the former PM Narsimha Rao, and Congress never gave Rao his due.   Sanjay Baru's tenure as media advisor was marred by controversies and eventually he was removed.
