Son of Congress CM offers seat to Yogi

Lucknow: Politics makes strange bedfellows. Now, son of a former Congress CM has offered has offered to vacate his seat for UP CM Yogi Adityanath. The 5-term MP from Gorakhpur, has to resign as MP and get elected to either house of UP legislature within 6 months.

Though it is not clear whether Yogi will contest assembly elections or go Akhilesh Yadav and Mayawati way and get himself elected to the legislative council and become a MLC.

Yogi is yet to decide, but many BJP MLAs are offereing their seats. One of them happens to be Fateh Bahadur Singh, the BJP MLA from Campierganj (near Gorakhpur). He is son of former UP chief minister Vir Bahadur Singh. “I have made the offer to ensure progress of Purvanchal. People of Campierganj will feel proud if Yogiji decides to make it his own," Singh was quoted as saying.

Former CM, late Vir Bahadur Singh was MLA from Paniyara seat. Campierganj was carved out from seat in 2012 after delimitation.

Interestingly, In 2001, Congress MLA Surendranath Awasthi had vacated his seat for Rajnath Singh when he was made CM in 2001. Later Rajnath helped Awasthi become a MLC.

Akhilesh had justified becoming MLC (rather than MLA)  by saying, “If I become MLC, then none of my party MLAs will be required to quit. People have voted for a particular MLA and it will be better if the person gets to serve the people who elected them.”
