Mumbai: Mumbaikars came out in large numbers on Tuesday to vote in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation ( BMC). The result was a record 55% voting. It’s the highest voting in BMC polls in the last 25 years. Voting was held for the 227 municipal wards of BMC.
The results will decide who will control the country's richest civic body. The BMC has an annual budget of 37,000 crore. The contest was mainly between the Shiv Sena and BJP. Just before the elections, Shiv Sena broke a two-decade old alliance with BJp and decided to go alone. The campaign was marked by direct attack on PM Narendra Modi by Sena boss Uddhav Thackeray. Shiv Sena has threatened to withdraw support from the Devendra Fadnavis government after the polls.
In 2012 Shiv Sena and BJP had contested the BMC poll as partners . Then Sena had won 75 out of 135 seats it contested and BJP 32 out of 63.
