Rs 97 lakh in scrapped notes seized, 1 detained

Thane (Maha): Demonetised currency notes worth around Rs 97 lakh were seized from a vehicle in the city and its driver was detained, police said today.

"Based on a tip-off, a police team laid a trap near Amit Garden at Reti Bunder in Kalwa here on Friday evening and intercepted a car," Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Doiphonde of the Crime Branch said.

"During the search of the vehicle, scrapped notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denominations collectively worth Rs 96,90,500 were found kept in gunny bags and a sack," he said.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Sanjay Channe, was detained. He was handed over to the IT department for further probe, Doiphode said.

Over the last one week, the Thane police have seized demonetised currency notes to the tune of Rs 2.25 crore and detained half a dozen people in three different operations.
