RBI will issue new 20 and 50 rupee notes, old currency to remain legal tender

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Sunday said that it will shortly issue Rs 20 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005, with inset letter 'L' in both the number panels, bearing signature of Urjit Patel.

The year of printing '2016' printed on the reverse of the banknote, RBI said in a release.

All the banknotes in the denomination of Rs 20 issued in the past will continue to be legal tender.

The RBI's announcement comes just weeks after the government scrapped the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes+ at midnight between November 8 and 9. A new version of the Rs 500 note, and new Rs 2,000 notes, have been issued since then.
