New Delhi, Sep 12: It was a foot-in-mouth moment for Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal when he said, "maths never helped Einstein discover gravity." What did Newton do then, ask Twitterati?
It was a foot-n-mouth moment for Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal when he said, "maths never helped Einstein discover gravity."
Goyal was attending a Board of Trade meeting when he said made this bizarre statement.
Piyush Goyal was answering to a reporter's query when he expressed his concern that at such dismal show of economy, how can one expect India to aim for a 5 Trillion economy.
Defending the government against the allegations of the economic slowdown he was trying to answer the question of how projected GDP growth rates don't seem to align with the $5 trillion-dollar economy mission.
Everyone was left amused and confused at the same time.
"Don't get into the calculations that you see on television...don't get into those maths. Maths have never helped Einstein discover gravity."
"If he (meaning Einstein) had only gone through structured formulae and what was past knowledge, I don't think there would have been any innovation in the world."
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri who was sitting next to Goyal was slightly amused but thoroughly speechless.
"Don’t get into the calculations on the television that say for a USD 5 trillion economy, the country will have to grow at 12 percent, today it is at 6 percent. Don’t get into these maths. Maths never helped Einstein discover gravity," said Goyal.
After his comments went viral on social media, Twitterati trolled him no end and interesting comments came out.
“Gravity is working against me and gravity wants to bring me down,” Union Minister Piyush Goyal appears to be humming these very lyrics from John Mayer’s popular song, titled Gravity. The Minister of Commerce & Industry was trending all over twitter, for all the wrong reasons!
