In a first of its kind effort, the Madhya Pradesh government has initiated a diploma course for the priesthood. The unique selling point of this initiative is that caste is no bar in this course and from Brahmins to the Scheduled caste--anyone can apply for this. There is no caste barrier. But the Brahmins are not going to take this initiative of the government lying low and unrest is brewing across the state. As the Puritans feel that priesthood, or purohitgiri is only the birthright of the Brahmins and can not be passed to any other community. Since ancient times, they say, this profession is practised only by the Brahmins.
A one-year diploma course will soon be started on 'Purohitgiri' (Hindu priesthood) by the MP government. It is for the first time that such a course has been introduced by the state government.
The course called Purohitam is to be started in July and initial reports suggest that it is generating lots of curiosity among other communities.
