Patna, Jan 24: Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Raghuvar Rai was shot dead on Thursday by unidentified assailants in Bihar's Samastipur district, police said. He was killed by two motorcycle-borne assailants when he was out on morning walk near his home in Kalyanpur, District Superintendent of police Harpareet Kaur said. Rai was a former Zila Parishad member.
Angry over the killing hundreds of his supporters blocked Samastipur-Darbganga road, burned tyres demanding arrest of the assailants.
Rai, 60, was on morning walk when the incident took place at around 7 am at Janardhanpur, under Kalyanpur police station.According to police, three or four assailants were involved. " Rai was shot from close range from one of the assailants. All the assailants fled before the villagers could reach the spot," police said. The RJD leader was taken to a hospital where he was declared brought dead.
"The motive of the murder is not immediately known, we are looking for the killers," said Samastipur Superintendent of Police Harpreet Kaur while confirming the incident.
Rai, who has served as Samastipur district councillor in the past, had not been very active in state politics and had been living mostly in Samastipur.
Launching a scathing attack on Nitish Kumar after the incident, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav said that there was “law and order chaos” in the state. “The state government must stop patronisation of criminals. The CM, who is also Home Minister, is not justifying his position as RJD as RLSP leaders are being killed. I wonder why the CM has been silent,” said Tejashwi
