Nirbhaya's parents were hopeful of justice and after the verdict came they were very relieved. The four convicts Vinay Sharma (23), Akshay Thakur (31), Mukesh (29) and Pawan Gupta (22) were awarded death. Supreme Court upheld the sentence given by the trial court in September 2013.
The Supreme Court to came out with the final verdict on four convicts of Nirbhaya Rape Case Friday afternoon. This brutal rape case had shaken the nation and vibrations and reactions came from across the world. A 23-year-old was brutally assaulted and raped by six men, including a minor.
The act and assault were so brutal that the girl slipped into a vegetative state and no amount of efforts could save her life. Such was the furore and angry outbursts of the entire nation that this led to the drafting of the 2013 Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill, 2013, which later was known as the Nirbhaya Act.
Six people, one of them a juvenile, were put on trial for the notorious December 2012 gang rape and murder of a female student on a bus in the Indian capital, Delhi. All of them denied charges of rape, murder, kidnapping and destruction of evidence - five were found guilty, while a sixth died in jail.
A bench of Justices Dipak Misra, R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan had reserved its order on March 27 after holding an elaborate hearing for more than 44 days.
