New Delhi: Among the six accused in the dastardly and infamous Nirbhaya Rape Case which brought utter shame to the nation as the world woke up to this horrific saga of brutality, one Ram Singh is dead and the other was set free as he was a juvenile. For the remaining four Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Mukesh Singh death sentence was upheld. Know more about these deadly criminals:
Mukesh Singh (29):
Mukesh Singh is Ram Singh's brother. He lived with his brother in a two-room shanty in the Ravi Dass slum and worked as an occasional driver and cleaner on the bus. He was charged with raping as well as hitting the woman and her boyfriend with an iron rod. These proved fatal as it caused excessive bleeding, both internal and external to Nirbhaya.
Vinay Sharma (23);
Vinay also lived in Ravi Dass slum area and was assistant to a fitness trainer. Of the five convicted, he was the only one who was educated and could speak English.In court, Vinay Sharma claimed that he was not on the bus when the crime took place and that he had gone to a music function along with co-accused Pawan Gupta.
Akshay Thakur (31)
Akshay was a school drop-out and had come from Bihar just a year back. He was a helper in the bus. After the crime, he had fled to Bihar and was arrested from there. Along with rape, murder and kidnapping, he was convicted of trying to destroy evidence by helping to wash the bus after the attack.
Pawan Gupta (22)
Pawan Gupta was a fruit seller and denied that he was on the bus where the crime was committed. He said that he had gone to see a music show. His father also pleaded that his son was being wrongly framed in the case. According to reports, in the days after his arrest, he said in court that he had "done a horrible thing... I have done a bad thing and I should be hanged", but his lawyer later denied he had made the statement.
